Confusing linker error

I'm trying to compile and link something, and make is spitting out the following error message:

/usr/local/bin/ld: cannot find -lpolkit-gobject-1
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

When I check to see if the library exists with ldconfig, it says:

libpolkit-gobject-1.so.0.0.0 (ELF) => /usr/local/lib/libpolkit-gobject-1.so.0.0.0

I'm guessing the "(ELF)" designation is the problem...
