How can I get tiling windows on Debian 7.8?

I would like to try a tiling window manager. But I'm a bit confused what might be the best approach. There is a whole list of suitable window managers at WindowManager

But I can't see which one is the most common and best maintained one.

Do I really have to switch the window manager? Or is there another way (keeping in mind that compiz is dead and I don't want to run old unmaintained software).

If so which one is the most common for use with Debian?

What do I have to keep in mind when installing?
