Realisitic to make home partition readonly or unmounted?

Suggestion for accidental removal of some files in a partition always includes making the filesytem of the partition read only or unmounted.

if the partition is for home,

  1. is it realisitic to unmount home or make it read only, without

    • much affecting running the OS under the same user of the home?

    • much affecting running programs (e.g. firefox, okular) , whichwrite to some hidden files (e.g. ~/.mozilla/, ~/.kde/) in home?

  2. Is it worth to create a partition dedicated for self-created files, compared to putting them in home?
