Building my own operating system

If I were to take a bunch of compatible packages, put them together and try to compile it, shouldn't it work? For example if I were to take some of the packages from Linux From Scratch and throw in some of my own packages, (making sure compatibility won't be an issue), and throw Grub as a bootloader.

Wouldn't this be considered a linux operating system? If so, why aren't there places that state such a thing. If not, what's flawed with the idea of this? If it all compiles together, and in the right place. Is the issue simply compatibility?

Now before you ask, I have tried LFS, and that seems to be missing a few steps (for example they seem to be missing a list of ALL things required for proper setup, I installed everything they recommended, and typed in everything the way it needed to be and it failed to compile the second pass through. Chapter 6 to be more specific.)
