need extra care when buying bluetooth devices for linux?

when buying a bluetooth or wireless devices for your computer/laptop

I guess most will probably work in windows/iOS but I'm curious if one needs to pay extra attention when buying one that will work on linux.

I think I've heard or read about it that all these wireless devices will need 'driver's in order to work with the system therefore the driver has to be able to support the type of OS the user is using.

I guess this means that when buying a wireless device(e.g. bluetooth keyboard) that will operate in linux, the buyer should check beforehand if it supports linux.

Is this true?
