NIS and /etc/passwd

In this question I tried to ask about moving a user from /etc/shadow to /etc/passwd.

But because shadow password is to be avoided in a NIS server: in your NIS server (a Unix or Unix-like system), did you migrate all your users to /etc/passwd?

And if not, how did you implement NIS?
