How do I get the latest version of software on Linux Mint?

I understand the difference between rolling release distributions and standard release. However, I'd like the latest version of software such as GCC, Clang, Git, Eclipse, gedit, etc.

So far I've either had to find a user-hosted PPA and add that to my package manager or build the tools myself from source. I was tempted to move to Arch Linux since I know it always has the latest software, but it's far too difficult to setup.

How can I get the latest software on Linux Mint? Is there a testing repository or something I can use?
