master slave for openldap or reinvent

I have an openldap server running on Xandros I want to move openldap to CentOS. I am new at Linux (Windows and MAC admin)

Would it be better to backup the current schema to another server and run slapadd and fix any database errors?

or

Would it better to set up a master slave openldap with the Xandros server, serving as the master. Create the slave on CentOS and then retire the master and promote the slave to master?

There will also need to be a symbolic link to the current file server as they do not want to change the naming convention/mappings.
