Linux Mint delayed image through HDMI

I've connected my Linux Mint laptop to the HDMI output. My problem is that the displayed image is only partly refreshed.

How can I make the HDMI display without delay?

(the malformed text are spots that have been updated while I dragged my mouse over it. The white boxes at the bottom are the cursors at location that has not yet been refreshed.)
